What I liked

There were lots of learning opportunities at the Bank, within the HR department I was able to work with a number of different teams on various projects to really make the most out of my placement year. Another benefit was the option to hybrid work for the majority of employees so this is one way that DB promotes a flexible work life balance. I had the opportunity to organise a CSR day so this was a great way to give back to the local community and bond with colleagues. The people I worked with were lovely and very welcoming as they took the time to explain things.

Finance analyst

June - August 2023 • London, England

What I liked

Working in an environment that focuses on systematic development of sustainable finance and fostering a diverse and inclusive culture made this summer completely transformational and an enriching experience for me. What set DB apart for me from other banks was its work culture. As a summer intern, I felt like I was respected and that my thoughts and opinions were valuable to the bank. I felt like I was integrated into the employee culture since day 1 because everyone at DB is a team-player and they focus more on collaboration than competition which can be very refreshing in the banking industry. The programme itself was very nicely organised across 9 weeks and not only did it help me gain a comprehensive understanding of the function of Finance at the bank but also gave me multiple opportunities to network with people from all across the bank in different desks and positions.

What I wish was different

Advice

Network as much as possible during your internship! Don't be intimidated if you feel like you don't know everything about the Finance industry, knowledge is just knowledge at the end of the day but attitude is everything!

Spring intern

April 2023 • London, England

What I liked

Sessions were very informative, providing an insight into life at the bank. In particular, the panel sessions and work shadowing were the most enjoyable and insightful. The panel sessions gave a unique insight into both senior and junior members of all divisions as well as a Q&A session at the end. The work shadowing was also very insightful, giving us a closer and more in-depth opportunity to learn about the people and divisions within DB. Finally, the networking opportunities were really well organised with opportunities to network with employees and others on the spring cohort.

What I wish was different

It would have been good to have the experience more personalised. We didn’t have the opportunity to choose what division to shadow or what division we could network with. However, this did give me an insight into the many divisions at the bank.

Advice

I would say to come prepared with good questions that show an interest in the bank/division and be confident when asking as it can be really helpful if you do.

Spring Intern

April 2023 • London, England

What I liked

I enjoyed the buddy system in the program. I was able to buddy with people across FIC and O&A, allowing me to ask any question I wanted about Deutsche Bank and their work. I also enjoyed the in-person networking events, further allowing me to expand my knowledge of the firm. I also enjoyed the work shadowing in the trading floor, as a part of the buddy system, as this allowed me to really feel what the culture of the firm was like.

What I wish was different

I would have liked the program to have been fully in-person. In my year, 2 days were online and 3 were in person. Online days were very well structured, however, and reduced costs for people commuting from across the UK.

Advice

Apply early to the spring program and have faith in yourself. Understand the business area you most have interest in when applying but also be open to new areas throughout the program.

Spring Intern

What I liked

The Deutsche Bank spring week introduced me to the company and their culture. It was very informative and really helped me understand more about their different divisions and what a job in their company would look like. Everyone was very friendly and answered any questions I had, and I was also able to shadow a banker. Also on the spring week we were given a "buddy" who worked at the company and I was able to have a coffee chat with her. This was very useful and interesting because it gave me a real insight into her career journey and what Deutsche Bank is like as a company!

What I wish was different

If we would have been able to pick what division we could shadow that would have made the spring week even better.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give would be to really engage in all the sessions and ask any questions you have as everyone is very friendly and there to help!

Analyst (Investment Banking)

June - August 2023 • London, England

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed my summer internship at Deutsche Bank for several reasons. First and foremost, the exposure to real-world financial transactions and complex investment banking operations was incredibly valuable. I appreciated the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, from financial modeling to market research, and witness firsthand how a global financial institution operates. The bank's commitment to professional development and mentorship was evident, and I felt supported by my team, who were always willing to answer my questions and provide guidance. The collaborative and fast-paced environment at Deutsche Bank allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. Additionally, the networking opportunities provided valuable connections in the finance industry that will undoubtedly benefit my future career

What I wish was different

First and foremost, the work environment was undoubtedly fast-paced, which is a characteristic of investment banking. While I appreciated the exposure to this intensity, it reinforced the need for effective work-life balance However, I must commend the Deutsche Bank team for their efforts in mitigating this challenge. They made considerable strides to help maintain a sense of equilibrium. While the demands of the job were undeniably intense, the team went above and beyond to provide support and encouragement. Furthermore, although the onboarding process was thorough, a more streamlined and hands-on approach to training, especially in the initial weeks, would have been beneficial. This would allow interns to quickly grasp the nuances of the bank's operations and become more productive contributors to their teams.

Advice

If I were to share one piece of advice with future interns at Deutsche Bank, it would be to embrace every opportunity for learning and networking. The experience at Deutsche Bank offers a unique chance to gain invaluable insights into the world of investment banking, and it's essential to make the most of it. Don't hesitate to ask questions, seek out mentorship, and proactively engage with your colleagues. Also, take the initiative to build relationships with professionals across various teams and departments within the bank. Networking is not only vital for your personal and professional growth but can also open doors to exciting career opportunities in the future. So, seize the chance to learn, grow, and connect during your internship.
