Year in Research Student

September 2019 • Wirral, England

What I liked

I loved being part of a working team and part of a project that you could really see coming together to form something that could really make a difference in the company. I liked being able to connect and take part in meetings with people from all around the world from different companies or academic environments. It was also really nice to have the chance to talk to people who work in the industry about their stories and how they got to where they are, it really gave an insight that helped me decide what I wanted to do after university. Whilst it was really good to be able to learn new techniques and types of chemistry that I may not have come across in university such as formulation and using robots.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've had longer to see the whole project to it's final stages. Although working partially from home for a few months during COVID, taught me a lot about computational modelling and planning, I would have liked to have the full year experience in the office.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and don't worry too much about not finding your feet straight away. It might take a while to settle in and gain appropriate knowledge on your work area, but once you have you will really start to enjoy your research and everything that comes with it. Make the most out of it, don't let any opportunity to learn go to waste.
