What I liked

* Induction and onboarding was smooth and gave me sufficient experience with the technologies we would be working with throughout the internship * Challenging and diverse nature of work, including client demos and internal presentations, pushed me to improve both soft and hard skills in a balanced manner; emphasis on holistic contribution to the team that doesn't just focus on lines of code written * Focus on clean code and good development practices allowed me to become a better developer * Strong sense of being consistently supported throughout the internship; regular feedback from intern trainer allowed me to identify and work on my weaknesses, and weekly mentor chats provided an opportunity to talk about any problems I was experiencing * Company culture that clearly values fun; many varying morale events that catered to all sorts of people, including sword fighting at the park and Blood on the Clocktower nights * Many employee benefits besides the aforementioned morale events, including free breakfasts, snacks and drinks throughout the day, and subsidised restaurant-quality lunches

Advice

Make the most out of the internship, not just in terms of personal development but also in terms of opportunities to have fun; at the same time, don't get too carried away as you still need to maintain professional conduct at the office.

What I liked

Excellent career development planning and wonderful training. Received loads of help when doing the intern project, and the trainer will discuss career choice as well as things you'd like to learn during internship. Overall very great experience.

What I wish was different

More diversity

Advice

Be the owner of your internship! Actively plan with your trainer what you'd like to learn and their feedback, don't be afraid to expose your shortcomings and also just accept people's ops:)

What I liked

We got a week and half to two weeks of training at the start so that no one felt left behind when we started the main project. Was also really good that the training we got was specific to the project we would be working on. I felt comfortable to ask for help when it was needed which helped me develop my skills a lot more than I would have otherwise. Also, having the chance to work on a real development project which would actually be used by someone in the future. There were multiple morale events a week which you could go to, all were really fun and run by the office.

What I wish was different

The office is quite large which can be a little intimidating at first. But there are also a lot of interns so you never feel alone in that newbie feeling.

Advice

Try and live nearby so that you can go to and enjoy all the after work hours morale events. You get to meet everyone and the events are always really fun - everyone is so nice :)

What I liked

Softwire is a fantastic company and I'd love to work there. The culture is very friendly and a lot of resources are put into ensuring everyone is supported and morale is high. The internship is very well-run, with the chance to undertake a verisimilar project scaled to last 8-10 weeks. Interns are trained before the project starts and there is a continuous feedback loop throughout the internship which is really good for personal development. Softwire are also really good at listening to feedback and it's clear they genuinely try to adapt the internship to best suit the interns.

What I wish was different

The internship feels a bit like an 8-week interview. Softwire are very transparent about how interns are assessed which is great but can also be stressful. This is largely inevitable but I think more could be done to acknowledge and alleviate the stress of an 8-week assessment.

Advice

I'd recommend to approach is largely as an opportunity for personal development. It's a very safe space with a strong focus on feedback and the trainers are extremely well-equipped to help hone both technical and soft skills. Asking trainers for help and proactively acting on their feedback will make the 8-10 weeks much more worthwhile.

What I liked

Great experience! Everyone on my team and in the office has been great to work with, and Manchester has a good atmosphere, especially with the morale events. The training program is very well structured, and I felt like i've learned a lot throughout the internship. We have been exposed to a wide range of problems, and if you wanted to learn something, you were given the opportunity to give it a go.

Advice

Get involved in the morale events, and approach this as a learning experience :)

The interview process was very quick and hassle free, and they offer everyone a great deal of support, initially with a really useful 2 week bootcamp. All the staff have been incredibly helpful and supportive, and the company culture is very welcoming, with lots of social events every week.

Overall it was an amazing experience. It was really fun being able to work on both front end and back end. I think it is really amazing that each intern gets to work on a meaningful intern project. The office is really nice, and everyone you spoke to was super friendly. The culture at Softwire is really inclusive and fun, and there are plenty of events and perks to keep you happy and engaged.

Advice

Make sure to make the most out of the opportunity. I found it really useful getting different tips and tricks from people with regards to coding, and it's really eye-opening hearing different experiences and journeys into software development.

What I liked

Softwire has a brilliant atmosphere of open collaboration and support. As interns we had a trainer who was in charge of the project we worked on and was our first port of call for everything technical, as well as a mentor who helped us integrate into the company culture, suggested morale events to attend and was always around for a chat. The work was hard but rewarding, and wide-ranging. Apart from the programming, we also got to do multiple demos and presentations about our project, as well as (unusually) some live user research.

What I wish was different

Advice

Get involved! There's always something going on in and outside the office.

What I liked

The work environment is supportive and flexible and the community is great. The support for a life outside of work is great and there are activities and events for anyone and everyone. The learning process also includes a lot of support; as someone who wasn't technically knowledgable at the beginning, I had so much support and opportunities to learn.

What I wish was different

I honestly have no complaints about this internship; I loved it. It would have been great to get to interact with more interns in a professional setting, but there were lots of fun activities for us to join.

Advice

Be comfortable with challenges and keep your mind open to learning as much as possible. Also, immerse yourself in the culture and go to events/activities/clubs!

Software Developer Intern

What I liked

I enjoyed working with fellow interns on a professional project. I feel like I now really understand what being a software developer is like. I also really enjoyed the morale events the company put on - they were a great way to connect with my colleagues.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer so I could've experienced more of the software development lifecycle - deployment, maintenance, etc.

Advice

Get stuck in! Attend some morale events and talk to people at the company to get a better understanding of Softwire.

What I liked

Fantastic internship structure. Accommodating towards interns at all level of experience, as long as you're willing to learn. Bootcamp was intense but got to learn a lot about various framework and languages quickly. Program got a great flow to it. Trainers were attentive and helpful. Got to code full-stack and work on a really interesting project. Welfare was great.

What I wish was different

Wouldn't have minded if the internship was longer but enjoyed the 2 months nonetheless.

Advice

Be curious and ask lots of questions. Be good at taking advice, processing it and don't be afraid to question your trainer's advice, it's a learning process for the both of you. Have fun and make lots of friends !

What I liked

- Full stack project provides excellent exposure to large scale development - Plenty of morale events to keep things interesting - Expert mentorship with your personal trainer - Structured internship programme All in all, not much to dislike at all! 10/10 would recommend.

What I wish was different

I'd be picking at straws here, but it would've been nice to have a preference on which project you work on. Projects are assigned randomly - they all seem interesting, but some may be of more interest to certain people than others.

Advice

Apply early to avoid missing out on an awesome summer!

What I liked

I really appreciated the overall professionalism around the interview process and at the job in general. Culture inside the company is really positive, everyone is really open and friendly. One of my favourite things about the internship was how well it was structured compared to feedback I received from friends that worked at other places. We had a good training period followed by a team project that was engaging and helped me develop on multiple fronts. Furhtermore, we had plenty of morale events during the internship which really helped us get to know eachother and become a cohesive team.

What I wish was different

I would have maybe just liked for the internship to be a bit longer, there were a lot of interns in the London office and sadly didn't really get to know all of them.

Advice

Get out of your comfort zone, use this opportunity to attend as many social events, meet as many people and also ask as many questions as you can.

Software Developer Intern

What I liked

- real project to work on that actually delivers product - 2 week training period to get you ready - morale events sponsored by company, think ice skating, picnic, bowling, karting - chill office environment, can take breaks when you feel like it - weekly feedback so you know how you are doing and how to improve - have dedicated mentor 1 to 1 meeting per week

What I wish was different

- relatively long training period (2 weeks) before you can actually jump into the project - 6 developer interns only one trainer, sometimes the trainer is too busy and cannot help on time

Software Developer Intern

What I liked

I have enjoyed the 9-week internship a lot! Got a two-week bootcamp to make everyone at similar level, then we started making projects that would actually be used in the real world! Our supervisor kept close communication with us and could promptly help us with anything related to the project. A lot of free morale events from the company too (was having so much fun with the colleagues)

What I wish was different

Softwire projects are mainly full stacks, but we were assigned with a more front end oriented ones. Heard that other people got both front and back end in their work so maybe this is slightly more exceptional.

Advice

Seize the chance to enjoy all the free morale events! There's a large variety from games night, craft club to badminton, bouldering etc. with usually free meals alongside!

What I liked

There is not much negative (if anything) I can say about my experience at Softwire. The job, the people, the office... all 5/5. A fantastic place to work with a very welcoming and relaxed culture, allowing you to be yourself and get the experience you need. Learning on the job is encouraged and development is taken very seriously. The work is rewarding and the chances to learn varied.
