The Role: Journalist Apprentice – S&P Global Market Reporter (Level 5)

 

The Location: London, Ropemaker Street 

 

The Team:  

 

As an apprentice looking to build and apply journalistic skills, you will join the global Market Reporting and Trading Solutions (MRTS) team, with the aim of becoming a Price Reporter and specialist in commodities markets. We are looking for apprentices who can work well within a team and can demonstrate exceptional learning agility, creativity, and problem-solving ability. Beyond that though, we’re also looking for commitment and enthusiasm. This Apprenticeship place deep investment in you as an individual. That means we need you to match that commitment: you’ll turn up every day ready to work hard, push yourself, and think differently about what you’re capable of. You’ll have the backing of a global firm, and you’ll rise to that expectation. 

 

What’s in it for you:  

  • 20-month apprenticeship commencing in February 2024
  • Four days per week working with our world-leading experts in market reporting and commodities markets to complement formal study with the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ)
  • Training – in addition to NCTJ study you’ll receive a mix of structured and on the job training, including the basics of market reporting, editorial standards and media law as they relate to the price reporting function, as well as feedback on rationales, market commentaries, research
  • Exposure to a number of market subjects including supply and demand, infrastructure issues, geo-political issues, transportation and regulation, and how these subjects impact respective markets
  • Shadow experienced market reporters in assigned markets
  • Receive hands-on research and reporting experiences and conduct research and writing assignments for potential publication
  • You will receive training and personal development opportunities to build on your Power Skills from our experience coaches
  • Rotations and placements are based on business needs and determined by the business.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Identify drivers moving the daily markets
  • Learn and demonstrate successful interviewing techniques and how to obtain data for commentary
  • Write concise, informative commentary and team briefing documents  
  • Represent S&P Global at industry briefings, virtually and online Verify source information through appropriate channels
  • Build understanding of S&P Global's Commodity Insights Market on Close assessment process
  • Complete all assigned news training modules and foundational training to learn about the commodity market.

What we’re looking for: 

 

  • A Levels or equivalent Any discipline, qualitative subject preferred (Grade 120 UCAS points overall) Essential.
  • GCSE or equivalent Maths and English (Grade C/4 and above) Essential
  • Strong communication (good verbal skills, listening techniques, and a clear, concise writing style)
  • Able to learn quickly, multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment; an appetite to understand global markets and a drive to be at the forefront of explaining their complex dynamics to our subscribers
  • Understand importance of building strong relationships and partnering with team members
  • Problem-solving, time-management, attention to detail & organizational abilities to work efficiently with clients
  • Intellectually curious; the ability to learn quickly
  • Some knowledge of social media and web technologies (e.g. HTML) comfort level with suite of Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint Excel)
  • The successful candidate must, by the start of their employment, have permission to work in the UK through UK citizenship or approved EU Settlement Scheme.
