SCP 7985 Career Zone Information/Student Engagement Assistant

 

Job Summary

 

The Career Zones are the front of house operation for accessing careers services for the University of Exeter on Streatham and Penryn campuses and are a focal point for students (and recent graduates) to access information and advice on graduate opportunities, part-time work, internships, work experience opportunities, enterprise, and self-employment. 

 

The position of Career Zone Information Assistant/Student Engagement Assistant offers an exciting opportunity for individuals with a keen interest in providing excellent customer service. The service is looking for students who have ‘can-do’ attitudes, are excellent team-players and are committed to providing an excellent and friendly service to students and other users of the Career Zones.

 

This role is part of the Student Campus Partnership (SCP) scheme and offers flexible hours from December 2025 to June 2026. You will work from the Career Zone in the Exchange Building, Penryn Campus.

Pay/Salary: £15.07 per hour (includes rolled in holiday pay)

 

 

Purpose of the Role

 

You will be part of a team that will support the Career Zones and will have the skills and enthusiasm, to help shape a high-profile service. You will assist in carrying out peer-to-peer activities and student-focused projects to deliver excellent customer service and ensure students receive prompt and professional responses to their enquiries and needs. 

 

You will be able to respond to a wide range of student employability enquiries. This will involve offering front line assistance to students in person at the Career Zone Enquiries Desk(s) as well as using virtual online systems.

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

 

Customer Service

  • Provide a friendly and professional first point of contact for students and other users in person, by      online Chat, telephone or email and refer them to information, services and facilities that best meet their needs.
  • This could be at the Career Zone Information desk in the Forum, Streatham campus or in the Exchange, Penryn campus.
  • Proactive approach to student engagement.

 

Peer to peer engagement

  • Arranging and supporting the capture of student feedback.
  • Organising and hosting student drop ins
  • Supporting the Career Zone stand at Careers Fairs, Wellbeing Fairs and engaging with peers to answer employability questions.
  • Work with other team members to research themes for small events in Career Zone and help to run them.

 

Project Work

  • The Career Zone student staff contribute to the continuous improvement of the service by identifying opportunities for more effective working practices eg Sustainability Audits, Careers Journey Checks or providing social media content that has a student voice.

 

Communications and Marketing

  • Communicate and liaise with Career Zone staff, student services and academic staff, where appropriate.
  • Prepare and publish information in online and other formats.
  • Assist with the marketing of Career Zone service and resources to students (including via social media).
  • Develop and distribute promotional materials on behalf of the Career Zone.

About You (Person Specification)

 

Essential Candidate Criteria:

  • Current students who are able to undertake some training in Term 1, 2025 in order to be able to work in the 2025/26 academic year
  • Genuine interest and commitment to customer care and customer service
  • Confident, “can do” and enthusiastic approach to challenges and/or pressurised situations
  • A knowledge of the work of the Career Zone e.g. skills programmes, events, Fairs, placement modules, study abroad
  • A good level of spoken and written English
  • Experience of work using telephones
  • Attention to detail
  • Able to work proactively, flexibly and prioritise tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate on all levels
  • An interest in researching information
  • Results orientated with a strong work ethic and professional manner
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Teams, and ability to learn new software skills quickly e.g. Handshake, Canva
  • Able to work autonomously but able to raise concerns to line manager.

  • Undergraduate students can work a maximum of 15 hours per week in term-term or full-time hours in vacation.
  • Full time Postgraduate students can work a maximum of 6 hours per week and no more than 180 hours per year, this includes those working already working as Postgraduate Teaching Assistants (PTA). You may work more hours with written permission from your academic.
