Undergraduate placement student
Quintessa is an employee-owned, scientific and mathematical consultancy company focussed on the energy and environmental challenges of the 21st century. We have a long tradition of providing undergraduate placements to talented numerate scientists. Indeed, three of our former placement students have become permanent employees on graduation.
The work we undertake is primarily related to solving environmental and energy problems (such as radioactive waste disposal, carbon dioxide sequestration and nuclear reactor safety) and often involves the development and application of mathematical models and software.
We are currently looking to recruit up to two undergraduate placement students, with one based in our Henley-on-Thames office and the other in our Warrington office. Students require an ability to develop an understanding of the physical systems being modelled and the motivation to learn and apply the associated numerical and IT skills by working closely with other members of our team. In addition, students are expected to contribute to general business tasks. In return, Quintessa pays a competitive salary and offers a friendly and relaxed work atmosphere in a company that is owned and run by its employees.
You are given the opportunity to contribute to projects of interest to you, gain experience that is directly relevant to your degree, develop your report writing and presentational skills, and meet and collaborate with employees from both offices.
Placement students invariably leave us well versed in some or all of:
- improved modelling abilities and understanding of their application to real world problems;
- experience in the application of technical software used for addressing a wide range of problems, including coupled processes, data processing and supporting decision making;
- the use of a wide range of commercial software packages including the Microsoft Office suite; and
- the potential to learn new programming languages.
To learn first-hand about the Quintessa student placement experience, please contact our current students, Ben Porter and Danny Bosworth.
If you would like to apply for a placement year at Quintessa, please email a copy of your CV and a covering letter to Richard Little by Monday 17th November.
Quintessa supports the principles of equal opportunity in employment and opposes all forms of unfair or unlawful discrimination. A copy of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and other policies are available on our Company Policies page.
Interested, but something stopping you from applying? We are committed to enabling applicants to be themselves and perform to their best ability. So, whatever it is, please contact one of our student supervisors (Josh Nicholas and Peter Webb) for a friendly chat about how we might support you.
