
Hydrologist (Technical Officer) - Pan Area Team - 31409

Come and join our friendly hydrology team and your responsibilities will be varied and rewarding. These include:
- Producing weekly and monthly water situation reports;
- Using river flow and groundwater data from multiple hydrometric stations to assess how much water is available to end users in different catchments;
- Modelling and forecasting river flows;
- Assisting with the management of water transfer schemes, including making decisions on whether to transfer water, how much to transfer, and for how long;
- Quality assuring river flow data, ensuring it is fit for purpose;
- Responding to abstraction licence applications;
- Reviewing water company Water Resource Management Plans and Drought Plans.
Key to all this is building relationships with our customers both within the Environment Agency and externally. This includes water companies, agriculture and members of the public who are affected by how water resources are managed in this part of England.
Site visits will be required as part of the role so you must be able to travel.

The team
Hydrology sits within the Water, Land and Biodiversity family providing information and advice to internal and external customers across East Anglia, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.
We are a friendly and welcoming team providing an integrated hydrology service. By analysing, modelling, forecasting and reporting we determine how much water is available, making decisions on when to operate our water transfer schemes.
We quality assure data working closely with other teams across the Agency to provide best service.
Experience/skills required
Essential that you:
- are comfortable using data and evidence to solve complex problems and can explain your decisions to wide-ranging customers.
- manage your own workload and collaborate with others to produce the best results for the team.
- are eager to explore innovative ways of working to produce even better outcomes.
- communicate effectively with both internal and external customers as well as your team members.
- be willing to undertake specialist/or further training when necessary.
- work well within a dispersed team, providing and receiving support and guidance.
Desirable:
Ideally you will have a good understanding of hydrology, demonstrated through applying different hydrological techniques to real world situations.
A relevant degree (e.g. an earth science or numerical degree) or equivalent
Previous experience in a role relating to water resources.
A driving licence as travel to sites and other offices will be required.

We have one full-time role available but will consider part-time.
You will be expected to attend your agreed office base as and when required. Our hybrid working model enables working from home dependent primarily on business need, allowing for personal circumstances where we can in agreement with line management.
You'll be responsible for work across our geographical area (EAN & LNA) regardless of your base office location. Available base locations are; Peterborough, Brampton (Huntingdon) and Ipswich.
