This is a 4 week full-time (37 hours per week) internship on a remote working basis.
The School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York is a hub for innovative research and practice in the creative arts. Our Enhancing Audio Description (EAD) team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of accessible media experiences for visually impaired audiences through cutting-edge sound design practices and spatial audio technologies. We are excited to offer a 4-week full-time internship opportunity during the summer break as part of our project, in collaboration with Oscar-winning sound supervisor Nina Hartstone. Our Post-Production Sound internship is ideal for someone passionate about sound, eager to build a career in the sector and to develop hands-on experience.
Project details:
The internship focuses on supporting post-production sound and media organisation within a creative project developed in collaboration with Nina Hartstone, an Academy Award-winning sound supervisor. You will assist in organising and managing media assets, contributing to post-production workflows, and ensuring smooth handling of audio materials throughout the process.
A working knowledge of Pro Tools and file management is beneficial, as the role involves hands-on engagement with industry-standard tools. You will also be encouraged to explore and adapt to new workflows, gaining valuable experience in professional audio environments. Moreover, you will be engaging on how industry processes and accessibility workflows can come hand in hand through consideration of the EAD (Enhanced Audio Description) framework. This internship aims to enhance your practical skills while contributing to the efficiency and creativity of the project.
The aim of this project is to help deliver a post-production-ready audio package that supports both the creative goals of the project and its accessibility aims. You will play a key role in making sure media is well organised, workflows run smoothly, and that inclusive sound practices are considered throughout.
We are looking for someone with:
- A working knowledge of Pro Tools
- Experience in sound editing and/or other post-production sound processes
- Good organisational skills, particularly in managing digital media assets
- Attention to detail when handling audio files and project data
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a team environment
- Interest in accessibility for visually impaired audiences
What the intern can gain from this internship:
- Hands-on experience in professional sound production workflows, including media organisation, audio editing, and post-production support
- Opportunity to work alongside an experienced team and develop practical skills in using industry-standard tools such as Pro Tools, while also learning to adapt to evolving workflows and creative problem-solving approaches
- Valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of a professional audio environment and provides a unique opportunity to build confidence, technical ability, and industry awareness within a supportive and collaborative setting
- Insight into the importance of accessibility in the creative industries and how innovative sound design practices can enhance media experiences for visually impaired audiences
