Digital Skills Assistant
Background:
The Digital Inclusion, Skills and Creativity (DISC) team is based in the University of York’s Library and promotes the development of digital skills and engagement with digital creativity for those interested in using emerging technologies. DISC staff offer digital skills and digital creativity development to staff and students via training sessions and running the Creativity Lab and YorCreate. Technologies involved include:
- Digital software to assist in academic learning
- Google Workspace/applications
- 3D modelling and 3D printing
- Video-editing
- Podcasting
- Tools and resources associated with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)
- 3D Scanning
The team provides guidance to students and staff on using appropriate digital tools for their needs; access to state-of-the-art equipment; the opportunity to learn and get to grips with using and applying digital technologies; the chance to apply new skills and training with guidance; and the chance to further develop skills via intermediate-level masterclasses which allow in-depth exploration of a specific area of digital creativity.
The Digital Skills Assistant will:
- Assist with the introduction of students and staff to the Creativity Lab;
- Support Creativity Lab staff with the delivery of workshops, including podcasting and 3D design;
- Deliver effective 1:1 technical support / advice to users;
- Understand the needs of learners and provide the appropriate level of support / guidance;
- Work closely with the Creative Technologist in the Creativity Lab. This includes learning to operate a variety of digital creativity technologies,
- Work with a range of Creativity Lab stakeholders, and actively engage with the Creativity Lab team;
- Work with the wider Digital Skills team, supporting activities in the YorCreate makerspace, skills provision and relevant projects.
- Help to maintain digital creativity equipment and equipment loaned out to users;
- Assist with general administrative tasks associated with lab operations and maintain accurate records of work, using appropriate IT software.
Requirements for the role:
- A keen interest in working in a digital creative environment and developing a range of digital technology skills;
- Experience of or familiarity with audio/podcast software); OR
- Experience of or familiarity with 3D modelling software and 3D printing;
- Confident communicator with the ability to interact well with a range of clients;
- Professional (reliable, punctual) and flexible attitude to work.
