Aviva Contingency Underwriting Graduate
Underwriting Graduate Pathway
Ready to shine bright in your career?
Whilst you might know Aviva for our home or car insurance, we offer all kinds of other specialised products, services and expertise in areas like Contingency and Marine Insurance too.
Our underwriting teams consider all the factors that decide how much insurance costs and assess whether it’s something we’d be comfortable insuring and, if so, how much we would charge our customer for it. The team are analytically minded, brilliant negotiators and creative thinkers, too.
Get to know the different pathway roles
There are two different specialisms on offer. You will have the opportunity during your application to choose the specialist, that suits your skills, interests, and aspirations best.
Contingency Underwriting: This is a new and exciting area of our business that’s rapidly gaining momentum. Our contingency underwriting team helps to protect our customers from the risks that come with planning events. With lots of potential for growth as we expand our portfolio, join us as a graduate here, and dive into something different and really make an impact. Your days will be varied, including time spent at Lloyd’s of London, building relationships with brokers and other key players in the contingency market. You’ll support the team by researching everything from artists and bands to political climates and weather patterns, helping to evaluate the risks around major events like concerts, sports tournaments, and even the Olympics.
Marine Underwriting: This fast-growing area of our business is all about protecting ships, the valuable cargo they carry and the ports and terminals they sail between. At Aviva, a big part of our marine insurance is managed by our expert underwriters at Lloyd’s of London, which is pretty much the heart of global insurance. You’ll immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere at Lloyd’s, teaming up with seasoned underwriters to assess risks, set prices and manage marine insurance on a global scale. You’ll be learning from a supportive team and getting formal training from the International Union of Marine Insurers, so you’ll gain practical skills in no time. As you progress there’ll be opportunities to manage your own portfolio and once you’ve moved into a senior position, there’s the potential of global travel and representing us in different markets.

Things graduates love about Aviva
Yes, we’re the UK’s leading diversified insurer. But we’re customer-centric and planet-minded. We’re acting on climate change and helping others do the same. We’re building stronger communities and investing in a future we all want to live in. And we’re changing the way we do business by championing everything from the living wage to women leaders.
We’re proud to be diverse, and just like our 19.5 million customers, our people are a mix of cultures, genders, and ages. We understand that one size doesn’t fit all and promote flexible ways of working for our team, so you can find your spark, your way.
The work we do is rewarding and challenging. And whatever role you’re in, we’ll give you the training you need as well as opportunities for you to develop yourself and grow in your career. We’re continuously moving forward as a business, and we’ll make sure you do too.
How to apply
The application deadline is December 15th. However, we may close the application process earlier if we receive a large number of suitable applications.
To set your expectations and help you prepare, there are four steps in our graduate application process:
- Online application - complete a short questionnaire about your motivations, and submit it along with a copy of your CV.
- Video interview
- Virtual assessment day with tasks that enable you to show us what you're good at and what you enjoy.
- Online situational strengths test
Shine there and we'll offer you a role to start in September 2025.
Please note: At Aviva we offer multiple graduate pathways, of which, this is one. We ask that you only apply for one pathway - the one that most aligns to your strengths and interests. If you do make more than one application, we will only accept your first.
Aviva is committed to inclusivity
We're inclusive, and keen to attract applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Research tells us that women in particular will often rule themselves out if they feel they don't tick every box. But don't let that stop you. If you truly believe you have what it takes, we'd love to hear from you.
We interview every disabled applicant who meets the minimum criteria for the job. During your application, there will be an opportunity for you to send us an email stating that you have a disclosed disability.
Please submit your application online if you can. But if that presents a problem, just email avivaearlycareers@aviva.com and we'll make sure you’re supported.
