Student Placement - Business design assistant - Change - Counter Terrorism Policing HQ - 2025/2026

The Met

The Met employs more than 44,000 officers and staff, plus thousands of volunteers. It provides policing to one of the most diverse capital cities in the world, including 32 London boroughs and a number of other local, national and international functions, such as counter terrorism and organised crime prevention.

As the country’s largest police service, the service is recognised internationally as a leader in fighting crime. Many other policing organisations look to the Met for best practice and guidance.

We are looking to recruit students for a 52-week placement with the Met. All roles will give students valuable insight and experience of working for one of the largest public organisations in the UK and the largest single employer in London. We seek to provide valuable practical experience wherever our students work.  

 

Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP)

At Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) our purpose is clear – to keep people safe from terrorism. To do this we are constantly evolving, developing new and innovative ways to counter the ever shifting terrorist threat.

Central to this is our business design practice who combine strategy, organisation design, strategy and operational model design to help define the future shape of CTP and drive transformational change. The business design practice is growing and we’re looking for experienced individuals with the right blend of critical thinking, creativity, insight, agility, and leadership to join this forward-thinking community of problem solvers.

As a business design assistant you’ll leverage new technologies, varied datasets, and specialist operational knowledge to undertake detailed analysis and develop evidence based solutions to some of CTP’s most complex challenges. You’ll collaborate and build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders from across the public sector, playing a pivotal role in reacting and reshaping the country’s CT approach.

The business design practice has three levels of experience that you will support:

  • Student placement – business design assistant
  • Entry - junior business design analyst
  • Experienced – business design analyst
  • Senior – business design lead

As a business design assistant you will be an integral part of the business design team working collaboratively with junior business design analysts to support business analyst led activity.

You will work to support a business design analyst, working collaboratively and with the support of the business design team to:  

  • apply creative problem-solving approaches to a broad range of business challenges and design questions
  • form relationships with relevant stakeholders across the organisation, including subject matter experts and operational colleagues
  • support in activity to gather user requirements and maintain robust governance of evolving design documentation and associated project logs
  • support in the organisation and delivery of workshops with key stakeholders at any level of seniority
  • support in the identification and collection of relevant data from teams across the business for qualitative and quantitative data analysis, spotting patterns and drawing data-driven recommendations
  • support in the production of documents describing business processes, gaps, and opportunities, bringing data to life using graphs, pictures, or diagrams

  • Experience applying critical thinking and using a broad range of creative problem solving techniques that can be used to solve complex business challenges.
  • Ability to undertake research and analysis, particularly impact analysis, in order to provide concise and meaningful recommendations.
  • Ability to identify and engage with stakeholders (internal and external) at all levels of seniority through excellent written and verbal communication skills
    Highly organised with the ability to work to changing deadlines, juggling multiple pieces of work at the same time.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, proactivity, and tenacity when approaching complex business challenges.

The desirable

  • Interest in matters pertaining to national security and awareness of the UK intelligence community.

 

Essential For The Role  

Must be an undergraduate student in a sandwich year course returning to study in Autumn 2026.
