SCP 7290 Digital Humanities Intern x7

 

Job Summary

 

As a member of the Digital Humanities intern team, you will be working on a range of Lab projects including using photographic and audio-visual equipment to support teaching and research across HASS subjects. You will spend time each week working at the Digital Humanities advisory desk which may include dealing with enquiries and offering support in the DH Seminar Room and time in the Lab spaces undertaking practical digitisation work using a range of equipment and techniques such as photography, 3D printing, audio and video editing and programming skills. We offer regular training sessions with members of the Digital Humanities team to ensure you’re confident with the equipment and project work being completed in the Lab.

 

One of the internships will be dedicated to working with the collections of The Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, the UK’s leading moving image museum. The intern will work with 2D and 3D objects from the collection to produce high-quality photographs, scans and 3D techniques such as photogrammetry. Conservation considerations will need to be taken into account when undertaking this work.

 

This role is part of the Student Campus Partnership (SCP) scheme and is for 8-10 hours per week form September 2024 to June 2025. You will work from the Digital Humanities Lab in Queens Building, Streatham Campus.

Purpose of the Role

 

Our DH interns provide a welcoming and responsive role within the Digital Humanities Lab, including dealing with enquiries and equipment loans for a range of staff and students. Key parts of the role include offering support with photographic, audio and video equipment and media, maintaining collections of specialist equipment and inventory within the Lab and following set procedures across digital photography, 3D digitisation and audio-visual capture, with opportunities to gain valuable experience and skills with these technologies. There will be an opportunity to learn how a range of historical texts and images are digitised to a high standard, and how to provide audio visual support to a range of Lab users. A range of other administrative and space preparation duties may also be undertaken; this allows interns to embed themselves within the team so that they can develop core skillsets and build up close working relations within a growing area of humanities research. 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

 

Your role may involve:

  • Supporting current Digital Humanities project work within the lab
  • Maintaining and using photographic, technical, and audio-visual equipment 
  • Providing technical and bookings support for a wide range of users of the DH Lab 
  • Care of Digital Humanities Lab spaces and equipment
  • Producing social media and video content 
  • Assisting users with set up for teaching sessions and events in the DH Seminar Room 
  • Archival photography in Lab 1 
  • Setting up and supporting audio and video equipment
  • Maintaining and using 3D printing facilities 
  • Working with users of the Lab and providing advice across a wide range of equipment, software and media as skills allow

Degree and Attainment

 

  • Currently studying an undergraduate degree programme within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

 

Skills

 

  • Interest in the development and use of technology for Humanities, Arts or Social Science subjects 
  • Able to deal professionally with staff and students 
  • Interest or experience in photography
  • Interest or experience in developing skills around digital methods or programming
  • Interest or experience in audio visual skills including recording and editing

About the University Department

 

The Digital Humanities Lab offers unique spaces, equipment and training for staff and students. We support innovative Digital Humanities research, offer training and teaching, and undertake digital preservation and display of historic material and artefacts using digital technologies and techniques. We’re a friendly team and you’ll be working with colleagues from a range of university teams including Technical Strategy and Operations, Library, IT and academic staff.
