Trainee art technician

Salary: £25,650 per annum pro-rated (London Living Wage)

Learn more about every aspect of the art technician role with a leading gallery, from managing inventory to executing an exhibition install, in this six-month internship.

Pace is a leading contemporary art gallery. It represents many of the most significant international artists and estates of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since its founding by Arne Glimcher in 1960, Pace has developed a distinguished legacy for vibrant and dedicated relationships with renowned artists.

As the trainee art technician, you will work closely with the senior gallery technician, to support the Art Resources services at PACE London, and in other offsite locations as required. This role will report directly to James Howard (the senior manager of Art Resources) who will oversee your training and integration into the wider team.

The successful candidate will be exposed to every aspect of the art technician role, from managing inventory to planning and executing an exhibition install and deinstall. They will also get a basic understanding of how the gallery work generally and potentially spend some time with other departments.

 

Key activities

  • Receive artwork at Pace locations - safe managing of art works, shipping paperwork and close communication with registrar and sales team
  • Packing and unpacking of artworks
  • Prepare and complete Condition Reports and enter respective information into inventory system
  • Communicate changes and updates of inventory with specific departments
  • Maintain comprehensive archive of condition reports and the digital images related to them
  • Administrative support for the Art Resources department
  • Maintain gallery condition – including painting or patching walls, ensuring spaces are always clean and tidy, and regularly checking service and facilities areas
  • Assist on the installation and de-installation of artwork, including lighting and preparing viewing space at the gallery, at clients
  • Monitor and replenish tools and materials stock levels as required
  • Assist with art fair installations
  • Create installation and maintenance instructions for internal and external use
  • Ensure the safety of art works, colleagues, and visitors

 

Knowledge, skills, experience

  • A friendly and welcoming manner when communicating within a team and externally
  • Strong interest in the contemporary art market
  • Keen attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite
  • Good written communication skills
