Wellbeing Intern

The college is looking for confident team members to deliver mentoring services to our students who have low level wellbeing/mental health concerns or behaviours and attitudes that are blocking their pathway to success.

Whilst working towards a qualification that allows you to work therapeutically would be an advantage, other social sciences, social work or health and social care students would be welcome to apply. We will provide coaching/mentoring training as part of your induction.

The job description is below. Please be aware that you will need to supply a DBS certificate in order to work 1-1 with students. The University can help you with this if you are successful.

JOB TITLE:                           Student Wellbeing Intern
RESPONSIBLE TO:            Director of Student Safeguarding, Behaviour & Attitude
JOB PURPOSE:                  To promote mental health awareness and improve wellbeing, behaviour and attitude of students across the college. To support teaching staff and coaches understand the their students. To work with a cohort of students in a 1-1 setting.
 
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
  • To promote emotional wellbeing and awareness of mental health issues across the College by organising and delivering workshops, events, activities, initiatives and schemes, in accordance with the Ofsted Inspection Framework.
  • Regularly conduct, monitor and review student care plans and college file to ensure they are effective for both student and staff.
  • To manage a small case load of students and work with them in a 1-1 setting using appropriate coaching and/or therapeutic skills according to training and experience.
  • To case conference with the team working with the student which may include health professionals, parents, counsellors, mentors, advisors, teachers and/or safeguarding members, as appropriate, to ensure cohesive support.
  • Undertake internal supervision dependent on case load.
  • To measure impact and contribute to the development of College policy, strategy and processes concerning students’ mental health and wellbeing, reporting to senior managers as appropriate, contributing to the College’s annual Self-Assessment Report and Development Plans.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1.      QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE
 
  1. Working towards a degree or other relevant qualification.
  2. Working towards a qualification that allows you to work therapeutically (such as mentoring, counselling, CBT, mental health nursing, clinical psychology or psychotherapy) would be an advantage.
  3. An understanding of the support needs of young people with mental health difficulties, particularly those in the 16-19 age group.
  4. Experience of creating and/or delivering high quality workshops and/or training sessions to a variety of audiences.
  5. Appreciation of the different cultural attitudes towards mental health as well as strategies for dealing with these.
  6. Experience of keeping and maintaining accurate electronic and hand-written records
  7. Knowledge of support services available to young people.
  8. Knowledge of the equality act and disability legislation.
  9. Experience of working independently and as part of a team to achieve effective provision of services with a flexible, adaptive and positive attitude.
  10. Ability to use own initiative, including the ability to prioritise.
  11. Experience of working in a customer orientated environment.
